The CGAT Programme

CGAT offers free analytical capacity to UK-based experimental groups. We collaborate on projects of the highest scientific quality and employ a joint first-authorship model.

At the same time CGAT trains post-doctoral researchers in next-generation sequencing analyses, thereby addressing the UK-wide shortage of computational biologists with skills and expertise in this area.

CGAT is funded by a 5-year strategic training award from the MRC Strategy Board.

Analysis of next-generation sequencing data

CGAT assists UK groups in their analysis of next-generation sequencing data. CGAT provides expertise, computational capacity and a dedicated post-doctoral researcher. CGAT is a scientific programme and not a service. Assistance is provided on a collaborative basis, and focused on gleaning important biological conclusions from large data sets.

Training in computational genomics

CGAT trains scientists at post-doctoral level in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data. Post-doctoral trainees in the CGAT group benefit from in-house training, but also the biological insights of collaborators. Working on a variety of projects, trainees accumulate expertise in genome sequencing-related fields, as well as high profile publications.

MRC Sequencing Hubs

CGAT has no sequencing capability of its own. However, CGAT is part of MRC strategy to invest in next-generation sequencing technologies. The central pillar of MRC strategy is its funding of four sequencing hubs across the UK (see the MRC announcement). CGAT provides expertise that complements the hubs’ existing analytical strengths whilst extending UK capacity in the interpretation of genome-scale data sets.
